CHICAGO, July 1, 2013 — The American Bar Association Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section is honoring lawyer Elizabeth J. Cabraser of San Francisco with its Pursuit of Justice Award, which recognizes lawyers and judges who have shown outstanding merit and who excel in providing access to justice for all.

“TIPS continues to recognize the finest trial lawyers in America with the Pursuit of Justice Award,” said Fletcher D. Handley Jr., chair of the TIPS Task Force on Plaintiffs Policy. “This summer, we will add Elizabeth Cabraser to that impressive list. Elizabeth possesses unparalleled expertise in complex civil litigation, having served as court-appointed lead, co-lead or class counsel in over 80 federal multidistrict and state-coordinated proceedings. She has been repeatedly recognized as one of the foremost litigators in our nation, including being selected an unprecedented four times as one of the ‘100 Most Influential Lawyers in America’ by The National Law Journal, which has called her ‘a pillar of the plaintiffs’ bar.’ It will indeed be an honor for me to present the Pursuit of Justice Award to Elizabeth Cabraser.”

The award will be presented to Cabraser during the TIPS Welcome, Pursuit of Justice and Liberty Achievement Awards Reception on Friday, Aug. 9, at the ABA Annual Meeting in San Francisco. The event will be held at 6 p.m. at the law offices of Sedgwick LLP. Reporters are welcome to attend the award presentation.

Cabraser is a partner at Lieff Cabraser Heimann Bernstein LLP in San Francisco. Under her leadership, the firm has become one of the country’s largest law firms serving clients seeking to redress for financial and consumer fraud, anti-competitive practices, harmful drugs and products, and illegal employment practices. Her areas of practice include consumer protection, defective products, personal injury, securities and investor fraud, and environmental litigation.

Cabraser is an expert in complex civil litigation and has held leadership roles in cases that resulted in landmark settlements, verdicts and precedent-setting rulings, including the Exxon Valdez disaster, breast implants, smoker and multistate tobacco litigation, Fen-Phen (diet drugs), Holocaust litigation, Vioxx, Guidant defibrillators and Bextra/Celebrex MDL litigations.

She has been recognized four times as one of the “100 Most Influential Lawyers in America” by The National Law Journal, and The Daily Journal has described Cabraser as “a commanding attorney and a role model for other litigators, especially fellow female lawyers.”

In 2010, the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession honored her with its Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award. The award recognizes the accomplishments of female lawyers who have excelled in their field and have paved the way to success for other female lawyers. It is regarded by many as the highest honor in the legal profession for female lawyers.

Cabraser received her J.D. in 1978 from the University of California, Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law and her A.B. in 1975 from UC Berkeley.

She is a member of the American Bar Association, including the Tort and Insurance Practice Section, Business Law Section, Committee on Mass Torts (past co-chair), Committee on Class Actions and Derivative Suits, and Rules and Procedures Committee (past vice chair).
